Theory is an important aspect of learning a musical instrument.

 

Here at Tunedin, students will learn the necessary elements of music theory alongside their chosen instrument. Even when learning 'just for fun' there are many elements of music theory which must be touched upon as skills progress.

 

For students learning grades many elements of music theory will be touched upon, but as your skills in your chosen instrument progresses a development in music theory becomes increasingly important for students wishing to pursue an education or career in music.

 

Music Theory lessons are available for those comfortable enough with their instrument, where they simply wish to learn more around the building blocks of music as a whole. Lessons will cover the basics of rhythm and notation, moving on to harmony and counterpoint, and then composition and the works and styles of other composers. For our theory lessons we teach using the ABRSM exam board, but people who do not wish to pursue grades are also welcome.
